I bought an old Rollei Twin Lens Reflex camera off a friend of mine recently and shot a roll of expired Kodak Portra with it. I honestly had my doubts about whether I would get any decent shots with it because the camera is seriously nothing like I’d ever used before. I’m used to manually focusing with my Contax 645, but doing so on a Rollei is a bit mind boggling. When you pan right, the image you view from the top of the camera pans the opposite direction which really throws you off. And you have a tiny little tiny circle where you have play “get the lines to match” up to get a really sharp focus. Square format is also something I had to get accustomed to. There’s not landscape or portrait option with this bad boy. And I pretty much had to approximate my settings as there’s no in camera metering system. I even had to ask my office manager to google online manuals one day to figure out how to wind and unload the exposed film so that I could send it off to Richard Photo Lab.
But I was pleasantly surprised with what I got back.
I really can’t wait to shoot more with this old camera. I just need to remember how to open it up and load another roll of film into it and I’m golden. 😛
